We are pleased to share a brand-new publication born from a collaboration among the 13 Interreg transnational cooperation programmes* implemented across Europe and along its external borders – including our very own Interreg NEXT MED. The brochure was jointly drafted with the support of Interact.

Why does transnational cooperation matter so much?

In today’s interconnected world, cooperation across countries and sectors is not just valuable, it’s essential. By bringing together public institutions, civil society, academia, and businesses from multiple countries, transnational projects create dynamic partnerships that:

  • Pool knowledge, resources, and expertise
  • Co-create solutions to common challenges
  • Develop resilient, long-term solutions
  • Foster mutual understanding and trust

3 key strengths of transnational cooperation

Based on 13 real project examples – one from each programme, including YEP MED on youth emplacement for Interreg NEXT MED – the paper highlights the unique strengths of transnational cooperation:

Building Solidarity
Transnational projects strengthen ties between territories, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration to address shared challenges more effectively.

Driving Synergies
By aligning efforts across sectors and borders, projects increase efficiency and amplify impact—creating more meaningful and coordinated results.

Delivering Change
From bold ideas to real-world solutions, transnational cooperation transforms innovation into tangible improvements for communities across cooperation areas.

A voice from the field: shaping the future of EU cooperation

As the European Union prepares for new legislative cycles and debates on the next EU budget for the period 2028–2035, this joint publication brings forward the voice of those implementing cooperation on the ground. It offers concrete insights and recommendations to reinforce the role of transnational programmes – such as Interreg NEXT MED – in shaping the future of European and Mediterranean cooperation.

We firmly believe that programmes like NEXT MED are essential tools for supporting stability, sustainability, and shared prosperity across the Mediterranean basin.

We invite you to explore this joint brochure and dive into the stories of innovation, solidarity, and impact that define the spirit of Interreg transnational cooperation.
