The WISEMED Workshop in Murcia on 17 March 2026 gathered farmers, researchers, and technology providers to co-create sustainable water management strategies.
On 17 March 2026, in the Region of Murcia a co-creation workshop of the WISEMED – Mediterranean Joint Water Management and Conservation Sustainable Solutions project focused on sustainable water management and the modernization of irrigation systems. The project, funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme, is coordinated by Istituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria (ICU).
Murcia, one of Europe’s most dynamic agricultural areas, faces significant water scarcity challenges. The workshop brought together farmers, irrigation communities, research centers, NGOs, cooperatives, and technology providers to share experiences, discuss challenges, and explore practical approaches for more efficient and sustainable water use in agriculture.
The event, organized by the CEBAS Water and Crop Production group, included discussions on technologies for biological farming, new crop varieties, water management and fertigation systems, as well as digital solutions. Participants exchanged knowledge on the current state of irrigation practices, identified key challenges, and reflected on the technical, financial, and environmental implications of modernizing water systems.
The workshop also served as a platform to define shared priorities and generate recommendations that could guide future local action plans. By fostering dialogue among stakeholders, WISEMED aims to support collaborative strategies and pilot initiatives that strengthen sustainable water management in the Mediterranean region.
Through initiatives like this workshop, the WISEMED project demonstrates how co-creation can transform challenges into opportunities, helping regions like Murcia build a more resilient and sustainable agricultural future.
