WISEMED Information Days in Jordan engaged over 100 farmers, strengthening awareness and uptake of innovative solutions for sustainable water management in agriculture.
Within the framework of the WISEMED project – MEDiterranean joint Water management and conservatIon SustainablE solutions, funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme and coordinated by the Istituto per la Cooperazione Universitaria (ICU), the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) successfully organised four Information Days for Farmers and Water User in the Dead Sea area, Jordan, from 30 March to 2 April 2026.
The initiative represents a key milestone in the preparation of the project’s pilot phase, supporting the transition from technical design to field-level implementation.
The events engaged farmers and Water User Associations, as well as farmers’ associations and cooperatives, reaching at least 100 farmers across the four sessions. The strong participation demonstrated a high level of interest in innovative and sustainable approaches to water management in agriculture.
The Information Days contributed to strengthening awareness and understanding of the WISEMED project among local stakeholders. They provided a structured opportunity to present practical water-saving solutions, discuss their relevance to local agricultural conditions, and gather feedback on farmers’ needs, challenges and readiness for adoption in Balqa Governorate.
NARC presented a set of innovative solutions, including subsurface drip irrigation, fertigation, mulching, soil water retention enhancers (polymers), sonication techniques, and smart irrigation technologies based on sensors and decision support systems. These solutions were introduced in a practical and application-oriented manner, highlighting their potential to improve water efficiency, reduce production costs, and enhance agricultural sustainability.
Beyond awareness-raising, the events played a significant role in connecting the project’s technical approach with real farming practices. They helped identify potential beneficiaries for the pilot activities and ensured that implementation is aligned with local needs and field realities.
Overall, the Farmer Information Days contributed to building trust and engagement with local farming communities, while reinforcing the foundations for the successful rollout of WISEMED pilot actions.
The activity underlines the key role of the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) in fostering innovation and supporting the uptake of sustainable water management solutions in agriculture in Jordan within the WISEMED project.
