Prof. Giuseppe Mancini from the University of Catania participated in SUM 2026 – the 9th Multidisciplinary Symposium on Circular Economy and Urban Mining, held in Procida, Italy, from 20 to 22 May 2026. The symposium brings together international experts, researchers, practitioners and policymakers to discuss the latest advances and challenges in circular economy, sustainable resource management and urban mining.
Within this international and multidisciplinary context, Prof. Mancini presented the MEDWISE project, introducing its overall aims, partnership and fields of application across the Mediterranean area. The presentation highlighted how MEDWISE contributes to more sustainable waste management practices by combining technological innovation, stakeholder engagement and cross-border cooperation.
Particular attention was dedicated to the ICT solutions being developed within the project for food waste prevention and reduction, with a focus on the AI-supported MEDWISE mobile app. Prof. Mancini described the app’s designed modules, key functionalities and target users, showing how digital tools can support citizens, businesses and other stakeholders in adopting more informed and sustainable behaviours related to food management and waste reduction.
By participating in SUM 2026, UNICT strengthened MEDWISE’s visibility within a leading international forum on circular economy and urban mining, contributing to the exchange of knowledge on innovative, digital, and Mediterranean-oriented solutions for sustainable waste management.
