Based on its annual risk analysis, the Interreg NEXT MED Audit Authority has recently performed two on-the-spot visits devoted to the new participating countries under the 2021-27 period, namely Türkiye (13-15 May 2026), and previously Algeria (16-17 December 2025).

The main goal of these visits was to check whether the management and control system for funding granted under the Programme 2021-2027 operates smoothly at national level.

As “Guardians of the Programme”, verifications carried out by the Audit Authority officers are focused on the functions of each body involved in management and control, the procedures for ensuring the correctness and regularity of expenditure declared, the electronic data systems for accounting, storage, monitoring, and reporting, the procedures for prevention, detection, and correction of irregularities, including fraud, etc.

According to the updated version of the Programme Audit Strategy, the next round of system audit missions is expected in the last quarter of 2026 and concerns Greece, Spain, Tunisia, and Egypt.

It is worth reminding that the Programme Audit Authority is hosted by the Presidency of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia and is functionally independent from the Managing Authority.

According to European Commission’s Regulation as applicable, the Audit Authority ensures that audits are carried out on the management and control systems, on an appropriate sample of funded projects, and on the annual accounts of the Interreg NEXT MED Programme. It is assisted by a Group of Auditors, composed of at least one representative of each participating country, belonging to the highest national authorities in charge of controls.
