3 days for field visits, a first-hand exposure to best practices within the Agritech Horticultural District of South-East Sicily and a collaborative Co-design Workshop
The three-day PROTECHMED Inception Camp in Ragusa, Sicily, came to a successful close on 5 June 2026, marking an important milestone in the project’s journey towards more sustainable and innovative protected horticulture across the Mediterranean.
Following two days of project coordination, field visits, and first-hand exposure to best practices within the Agritech Horticultural District of South-East Sicily, the final day focused on transforming knowledge into action through a collaborative Co-design Workshop on technological solutions for sustainable horticulture.
Bringing together project partners, stakeholders, researchers, public authorities, and sector experts, the workshop created a dynamic environment for knowledge exchange and joint planning. Participants engaged in thematic discussions covering key areas such as water management, energy efficiency, environmental control, digital irrigation and fertigation systems, nutrient management, integrated pest management, circular economy approaches, and capacity-building models.

A central element of the day was the co-design process dedicated to the project’s pilot actions in Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, and Tunisia. Through focused working groups, participants exchanged expertise, explored technological solutions, and jointly developed conceptual blueprints tailored to the specific needs and challenges of each pilot territory.
The camp concluded with a plenary session where findings, recommendations, and proposed pilot concepts were presented and discussed, reinforcing the project’s collaborative approach and shared vision for the future of Mediterranean protected horticulture.

The Inception Camp successfully achieved its objectives by fostering meaningful transnational cooperation, facilitating the exchange of know-how and best practices, and advancing the design of innovative solutions that will be implemented through PROTECHMED pilot actions. The valuable insights generated over the three days will play a key role in driving the project forward and strengthening collaboration among partners as the next phase of implementation begins.
A sincere thank you to all partners, stakeholders, experts, and participants whose active contribution made this event a success.
