AI-powered interventions under development by MEDAIGENCY will be discussed at the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, connecting Mediterranean experience in health emergencies with global discussions on responsible and inclusive artificial intelligence.
When an emergency strikes, fragmented information, delayed coordination and limited access to timely guidance can affect how quickly institutions and communities respond. Across the Mediterranean, MEDAIGENCY is exploring how artificial intelligence can help address these challenges while remaining ethical, inclusive and grounded in real needs.
From 7 to 10 July 2026, MEDAIGENCY will be represented at the AI for Good Global Summit held at the Palexpo in Geneva, Switzerland. Organized by the International Telecommunication Union in partnership with more than 50 United Nations agencies and co-convened by the Government of Switzerland, the Summit brings together representatives from government, academia, industry, civil society and the technical community to explore how AI can contribute to global development.
The project’s participation follows the selection of four MEDAIGENCY use cases for showcasing through the Summit’s Innovate for Impact initiative. The initiative promotes the responsible and inclusive adoption of AI by identifying practical applications, supporting knowledge exchange and connecting promising solutions with international expertise and collaboration opportunities.
On 7 July, MEDAIGENCY Project Principal Investigator Dr. Imad H. Elhajj, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Co-Coordinator of the Humanitarian Engineering Initiative at the American University of Beirut, will participate as a panelist in the Innovate for Impact programme. He will join the policy panel on responsible AI development, contributing perspectives from MEDAIGENCY’s work across the Mediterranean and highlighting four use cases from the project’s portfolio of AI-powered solutions.
The use cases are being developed to support different stages of health emergency management, from preparedness and early action to response and recovery. They form part of MEDAIGENCY’s wider effort to develop six AI-powered solutions that respond to challenges identified with policymakers, service providers, emergency actors and communities in Lebanon, Palestine, Türkiye, Italy and Spain.
Rather than starting with technology, the project began by examining the gaps experienced by institutions and affected communities. These included fragmented information, limited real-time coordination, difficulties in allocating resources and barriers preventing people from accessing reliable, location-specific guidance during emergencies. Stakeholders are continuing to contribute to the design and assessment of the proposed solutions to ensure they remain relevant to operational realities.
Ethics is integrated throughout the development process. MEDAIGENCY’s Ethics Advisory Board provides independent guidance on issues such as privacy, transparency, potential bias, equitable access and responsible deployment. This approach aims to ensure that the solutions are not only technically effective, but also trustworthy and appropriate for the people and institutions expected to use them.
Ms. Aline Germani will also participate in the Summit and represent MEDAIGENCY, supporting engagement with international experts, institutions, innovators and potential collaborators.
Participation in the AI for Good Global Summit provides MEDAIGENCY with an opportunity to place Mediterranean experiences within a wider global conversation. It will allow the project to exchange knowledge, receive feedback and explore how its emerging solutions could be strengthened and eventually adopted by project stakeholders and beyond.
