Beni Mhira, Tunisia – 03 April 2026

Strengthening access to healthcare in southern Tunisia was at the core of the meeting of the Local Thematic Committees (LTCs) of the Tataouine Governorate, held at the Beni Mhira Intermediate Health Centre.

Organised within the framework of the CAREMED project by the Direction des Soins de Santé de Base (DSSB) project partner, the meeting represented an important step towards bringing healthcare services closer to local communities and reinforcing primary healthcare delivery.

The CAREMED Project – Community-based Approach for Resilient Mediterranean Health, is co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme and led by the Meyer University Hospital.

The meeting brought together local health authorities, healthcare professionals and relevant stakeholders, fostering dialogue, coordination and the identification of priority actions to better respond to the needs of the population in the Tataouine region.

Project presentation

The LTCs meeting was dedicated to the presentation of the CAREMED project, which aims to improve the prevention and management of chronic diseases by strengthening primary healthcare services and bringing care closer to the population.

Local health context

Participants reviewed the organisation of local health services, highlighting the role of the Beni Mhira Intermediate Health Centre and surrounding primary healthcare facilities in providing regular consultations and follow-up for patients, including those with chronic conditions.

Engagement of stakeholders

During the meeting, local stakeholders expressed their commitment to supporting the implementation of the project. The importance of involving local community organisations was also highlighted as a key factor for strengthening the project’s impact and outreach. Looking ahead, the LTCs meeting outlined the upcoming activities to be implemented in the area, including information sessions, screening days, and training programmes for healthcare professionals based on the Active Patient Care Model promoted by the Spanish project partner.

Conclusion

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to move forward with CAREMED activities and reinforce more integrated, patient-centred healthcare services in the area.
