Cities working with nature : NBS4MED partners explore urban solutions in Barcelona metropolitan area

A study visit of the NBS4MED will take place on 21-22 May  2026 in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, Spain where partners will explore several inspiring urban spaces transformed through nature-based approaches.

At Parc del Turonet, in Cerdanyola del Vallès, participants will visit the future site of the project’s tiny urban forest pilot action. This innovative intervention will demonstrate how small but dense forests can cool cities, store carbon, improve air quality, and create healthier neighbourhoods. The site will become a living laboratory for testing solutions that could later be replicated in cities across the Mediterranean.

The visit will also include the ecological landscape of the Llobregat River, where large-scale restoration efforts have transformed the river corridor into a vibrant natural space supporting thousands of plant and animal species. The river now functions as an essential green corridor connecting inland natural areas to the coast and supporting biodiversity across the region.

In the heart of Barcelona, partners will explore Parc de les Glòries, a remarkable example of how traffic-dominated infrastructure can be transformed into a green public space that improves air quality, reduces noise, and enhances climate comfort for residents.

Another key stop will be the Poblenou Superblock, part of Barcelona’s pioneering “Superblock” initiative. Here, streets once dominated by cars have been redesigned as vibrant community spaces where people can walk, play, relax, and reconnect with nature.

Learning from real-world actions

By exploring successful examples and future pilot sites on the ground, partners will exchange ideas, build shared knowledge, and strengthen collaboration to scale up nature-based solutions across the Mediterranean. From tiny forests and ecological corridors to sponge parks and green roofs, these experiences will help inspire the next generation of urban interventions, showing how working with nature can help cities become cooler, greener, and more resilient.
