The Oceanography Center coordinates the MedJICARP (Mediterranean Joint Initiative for Climate Adaptation and Risk Prevention) project, funded through the Interreg NEXT MED Programme.

The project is a clear example of how science and transnational cooperation can transform our relationship with the sea, reflecting the spirit of this year’s World Oceans Day theme.
The Mediterranean is among the regions most affected by climate change. Rising sea temperatures, changes in salinity, the spread of invasive species, sea level rise, and increasingly intense extreme weather events threaten marine ecosystems, coastal communities, fisheries, tourism, and local economies.
MedJICARP addresses these challenges through broad collaboration among scientific and research organizations from Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Italy, Lebanon, Egypt, and Tunisia.
The project aims to:
- Develop a coordinated marine monitoring network across the Eastern and Central Mediterranean.
- Collect and utilize high-quality oceanographic data.
- Improve forecasting capabilities regarding climate change impacts.
- Strengthen the resilience of coastal communities.
Through the generation and dissemination of reliable data, the development of innovative monitoring and forecasting tools, and stronger cooperation among scientists, public authorities, and social stakeholders, MedJICARP contributes meaningfully to creating a new relationship with the ocean—one grounded in knowledge, responsibility, and the long-term protection of the marine environment.
On the occasion of World Oceans Day 2026, MedJICARP partners call on citizens, institutions, businesses, educational organizations, and policymakers to redefine their relationship with the ocean and recognize the decisive role of science in protecting the marine environment.
