On 22 May, MEDWISE marks the International Day for Biological Diversity, celebrated each year to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. In 2026, the official theme is “Acting locally for global impact”, highlighting the importance of local action in halting and reversing biodiversity loss.

This message strongly reflects the vision of MEDWISE. Across Mediterranean territories, the project promotes local solutions that can generate wider benefits for ecosystems and communities: decentralized composting, industrial symbiosis, and the new MEDWISE app. Together, these actions can help reduce waste, improve resource efficiency, and encourage citizens and stakeholders to play an active role in more sustainable and biodiversity-friendly practices. This fits well with the 2026 campaign’s focus on local participation, connection, and action.

In particular, the MEDWISE app can be especially relevant for food waste prevention, citizen involvement, and awareness-raising, turning everyday choices into practical local action. In this way, MEDWISE contributes to the broader idea behind Biodiversity Day 2026: that meaningful change often starts close to home, but its benefits can extend far beyond.
