The STORM project was presented with great success at MEDIEDIL Construction Fair 2026, held from 8 to 10 May at the Fiera del Mediterraneo in Palermo.

The project was showcased within the stand of the University of Palermo – Department of Architecture, offering an important opportunity to introduce STORM’s objectives, activities and expected impacts to professionals, companies, institutions and stakeholders in the construction and energy sectors.

The University of Palermo team, coordinated by Prof. Fabio Cardona, with the participation of Prof. Federica Fernandez, Prof. Elvira Nicolini and Prof. Giuseppe Marino, presented the project’s contribution to the development of more sustainable heating and cooling systems in Mediterranean contexts through Seasonal Thermal Energy Storage – STES technologies.

Particular attention was given to the pilot activity planned in Palermo, based on a solar-based BTES system integrated with an innovative hybrid thermo-electric cogeneration system. The pilot will support the collection of technical, environmental and economic data and will contribute to the development of replicable solutions for different Mediterranean climatic and geological conditions.

A significant moment took place during the MEDIEDIL Matchmaking Event, where the STORM team met a delegation from Morocco coordinated by the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of the Regions of Rabat, Salé and Kenitra. The delegation expressed strong interest in the project and in the Palermo pilot, opening promising perspectives for future dialogue, knowledge exchange and Mediterranean cooperation on sustainable energy innovation for the built environment.

The participation in MEDIEDIL 2026 confirmed the relevance of STORM as a strategic project for the energy transition, the decarbonization of buildings and the strengthening of climate resilience in the Mediterranean area.
