As part of the YOU(th)CARE4planet project, two storytelling videos are being developed in Tunisia to document youth engagement in local climate adaptation processes. Initially planned for the project’s capitalisation phase, their production was brought forward to the implementation stage in order to capture ongoing field dynamics and give visibility to the exchanges currently taking place in the project regions.
From 30 May to 1 June 2026, members of the Youth-Led Research Steering Group (YLRG) gathered in Hammamet, Tunisia, at the Sol Azur Beach & Congress Hotel for a three-day scriptwriting workshop. The session brought together young participants from the project’s intervention areas to co-develop the narratives of the two videos, drawing directly on their experiences, field observations and local realities.
In Tunisia, this storytelling process is closely linked to the collaborative development of local adaptation plans in the project’s intervention regions of Jendouba, Sousse and Gabès, located respectively in the north-west, central-eastern coast and south-east of the country. These regions reflect diverse environmental and socio-economic contexts. Jendouba faces challenges related to agricultural dependency, natural resource management and forest ecosystem pressures. Sousse, a coastal and urban area, is confronted with urban expansion, coastal degradation and environmental stress linked to development dynamics. Gabès experiences severe ecological pressures, water scarcity and climate-related vulnerabilities affecting fragile local ecosystems. Together, they illustrate the diversity of climate challenges addressed through the project.
The storytelling videos aim to document this adaptation planning process as it unfolds. Rather than focusing solely on final outputs, they highlight how the eight plans are being shaped through dialogue, local knowledge, collective reflection and youth participation. This approach positions climate adaptation as a participatory and evolving process rooted in territorial realities.
The scriptwriting workshop represented a key step in this approach. Over three days, YLRG members worked on narrative structure, character development, dialogue writing and storytelling techniques, while drafting the first versions of the two scripts. This process enabled young participants to define the perspectives, themes and voices that will shape the videos, ensuring that the narratives are grounded in lived experience and local engagement.
In the coming months, filming will take place during participatory discussions, coffee talks and other field activities in the project regions. These moments will allow the production to capture real-time interactions, youth voices and ongoing reflections linked to the adaptation planning process.
By integrating communication activities directly into the implementation phase, YOU(th)CARE4planet strengthens the authenticity of its storytelling approach. The final videos will not only present project activities, but also reflect the way young people actively contribute to shaping climate adaptation narratives in their territories, transforming field experiences into shared stories of change.
