Join MedPROACT’s Event “A Sea Under Stress: Understanding the Pressures and Building Responses for the Future of Communities” in Otranto

Going by the title “A Sea Under Stress: Understanding the Pressures and Building Responses for the Future of Communities”, the meeting will focus on the multiple stresses currently affecting the Mediterranean and its coastal communities: climate change, erosion, biodiversity loss, tourism pressure, pollution, transformation of marine habitats, the presence of invasive alien species, and growing competition between different uses of the sea and coast.

MedPROACT Launch Event in Italy on July 4: Focus on Coastal Erosion, Anthropic Pressures and Biodiversity Loss

On July 4, in Otranto (Puglia), representatives from CIHEAM Bari, Legambiente and Università di Siena (the Italian MedPROACT's project partners) will meet local stakeholders, regional and municipal insitutions to discuss anthropic impacts on marine ecosystems, coastal erosion and how to find a sustainable way of managing biodiversity conservation, tourism and fishing.

Mediterranean Coastal Communities Set to Be More Climate-Resilient with MedPROACT

The MedPROACT project aims to enhance the adaptive capacity of Mediterranean coastal communities to climate change, and this goal is achieved through scientific research and a participatory process lead on the field in collaboration with local project partners.

Seagrass Meadows, The “Ecological Thermometer” of the Mediterranean, Main Target of MedPROACT Climate Mitigation Actions

MedPROACT, while building adaptation plans together with the local communities and administrations, will consider the consequences of losing seagrass meadows in the pilot sites involved (Italy, Turkey and Tunisia): increased erosion, biodiversity loss and the consequent decline in fisheries resources, worsening of water quality and enhanced exposure to climate change. These effects are all connected to local socioeconomical conditions: protecting Posidonia oceanica means protecting coastal communities' survival.
